Advanced Placement Course Policy
Advanced Placement (AP) |
| Burgettstown Area Middle/High School offers College Board sponsored Advanced Placement courses with the intention of providing an avenue for students who wish to challenge themselves with college level rigor and potentially earn credits toward a post-secondary program. The catalog of established AP courses will include Biology, Chemistry, Calculus AB, Statistics, Computer Science A, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, German Language & Culture, Psychology, and United States History. Enrollment in an AP course signifies an agreement to participate in the end of the year exam for potential college credit. Payment of examination fees is the responsibility of the student/family. Payment will be due before the exam date(s). The cost is significantly less than a three credit college course. The College Board requires exam registration in the fall. Any student who drops an AP course after the fall registration will incur an exam cancellation fee per the College Board. |

Dual Enrollment Program
Burgettstown Area School DistrictDual Enrollment ProgramFor Students in Grades 11 & 12Burgettstown Area School District will accept both on-campus and online college dual enrollment courses for high school units towards graduation. Students will have the opportunity to earn both high school units (2 per course) and college units (3 to 4 per course) through the program. To enter the Dual Enrollment Program, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Courses offered in the college setting are subject to the application and enrollment requirements of the college. Each approved semester course successfully completed at a college will equal 2 units of Burgettstown graduation credit. Dual enrollment courses will not count towards a student's Burgettstown GPA or class rank. Generally, the course must be academic (English, math, history, or science departments) and not be an elective course.
Any course tuition costs, fees, and book charges must be paid by the students and family at the time of course enrollment. All courses must be approved by the Guidance Office and the Principal prior to registration. Questions regarding registering for dual enrollment courses should be directed to Mrs. Riley and the college’s Admissions Office.
All students interested in Dual Enrollment courses are strongly encouraged to contact the Admissions Office of each college they will be applying to in order to determine if the dual enrollment units will be accepted for transfer to the college each student enrolls in after high school graduation.
Burgettstown students have taken dual enrollment courses recently at the following colleges: Pitt, Penn State Beaver, WVU, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Clarion University, PennWest California, WVNCC, CCAC, CCBC, Pittsburgh Technical College, etc. Once enrolled in a course, a copy of the registration form must be turned in to the Guidance Office. Upon completion of the course, a copy of the grade transcript must be turned in to the Guidance Office. You will not receive high school units for the course until you turn in all of these materials.

* Washington County Career and Technology Center programs are developed to follow the State guidelines for Programs of Study. Programs of Study incorporate secondary education and postsecondary education elements; include coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant career and technical content in a coordinated, non-duplicative progression of courses that align secondary education with postsecondary education to adequately prepare students to succeed in postsecondary education; may include the opportunity for secondary education students to acquire postsecondary education credits and lead to an industry-recognized credential or certificate at the postsecondary level or an associate or baccalaureate degree. Upon completion of a career and technical education (CTE) Program of Study (POS), students are eligible for statewide articulation credits. The Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program allows CTE students to earn free college credits. Students can earn these free credits if you have scored well on your NOCTI and if your instructor can confirm that you have completed your entire CTE program. Questions about CTC programs may be directed to the main office at the high school or the CTC.

Student Recruiters Policy
Student Recruiters Policy |
|
The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the federal National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002, and Pennsylvania Act 10 of 1991 require school districts to provide post-secondary institutions, military recruiters, and prospective employers equitable access to secondary students. These federal and state laws require schools to provide post-secondary institutions and military recruiters (not prospective employers), upon request, access to the names, addresses and telephone listings of junior and senior students--unless the student or the parent/guardian requests that information not be released without prior written parental consent. The district must notify parents/guardians of the option to make such a request.
The federal Family Compliance Office recently has advised that a student's own request to opt-out must be honored, even when the student is not 18 years old. However, the notification requirement applies only to parents/guardians. Act 10, the state law, mandates additional requirements and timelines. The school district must make available, by the first day of the academic year, a list of seniors who will graduate that academic year. Military recruiters are entitled to request and receive the list throughout the year. In addition, the school must notify parents/guardians in writing of this obligation and allow them at least 21 days to make a written request to be excluded from the list before it is available for release. Parents/Guardians must be notified of this information no later than the end of the student's junior year. The Guidance Office mails the opt-out letter to all junior students in the spring of the junior year.
